Internal displacement is an issue that affects regions around the world. Countries ravaged by civil wars, government oppression, human rights abuse or other internal conflicts produce the mass displacement of persons (referred to as IDPs) to other parts of the country seeking refuge (Knox and Marston,108-109, 2010). Within the context of Colombia this paper will first explore the economic challenges that IDPs must face and discuss how these challenges effect displaced women. It will then discuss how the gendered division of labor in the household impacts these geographies of displacement. Lastly, it will examine the link between the urban environment, and shifting gender dynamics within the context of internal displacement. Colombia provides a good case study from which to examine the issue of internal displacement, because Latin America is the world region with the second most severe IDP situations, Africa being number one (Knox and Marston,108-109, 2010). Colombia in particular has a dramatically high number of IDPs, accounting for up to 8.6% of Colombia’s total population (Carrillo,529, 2009). The capital city of Bogotà ¡ has the largest population of IDPs in the country, approximated to be 244,184 (Carrillo,530, 2009).These high numbers are a result of the Guerrillas and paramilitaries targeting rural civilians by way of â€Å"arbitrary killings, looting, and destruction of property† in order to take control of their land for economic and political benefit and in order to possess strategic territory (Knox and Marston,108-109, 2010). Increasing Safety by Increasing Age Limits of Drivers Many Albertans and fellow Canadians may agree that driving is an act of responsibility and maturity. Giving out licenses to teenagers, who tend to make risky and thoughtless decisions, is something the country should considered prohibiting. Due to such careless actions, crash rates are much higher for younger drivers than older, more experienced ones. The increase in fatality for teen drivers may be highly influenced by the lack of wearing seat belts, and their tendency to speed more. Not only are they creating a huge risk for themselves, but also for others around them. The driving age limit in Alberta, as well as in Canada, should be raised to eighteen to ensure the safety of other citizens and teens themselves. By decreasing the rate of accidents, preventing recklessness and carelessness on the roads, and lastly ensuring that all laws are obeyed when driving, may be a step towards the right direction of creating a safer community, and more manageable society. To decrease fatality and accident rates in Alberta, the age of obtaining a license should be raised. Service Alberta states, that to begin learning to drive an automobile you must be at least fourteen, while to obtain a license you must be a minimum of sixteen years-old (Driver’s License; Class 5). To save lives, not only in Alberta, but also nation-wide, the government should greatly consider changing this law. According to Daniel R. Mayhew, crash rates tend to decline as age increases (Changes in collision rates among novice drivers during the first months of driving). â€Å"Teen drivers make up about 7 percent of licensed drivers, but they account for 14 percent of the fatalities in accidents† (Teenager Car Accident Statistics). With this knowledge, Albertans should invest more determination in the upbringing of the age limit to cause less worry for their citizens. Some steps have already been taken, such as bringing in a Graduated Driving License program; which requires driver’s to complete many different steps of learning and training, before a full license is received (Teenager Car Accident Statistics). Within a short ten-year span, the nation is able to see that teen crash rates have dropped 7 percent (Teenager Car Accident Statistics). Possibly raising the age at, which teens must be supervised to drive, may also improve their driving skills, and at the same time lead to fewer accidents. Obtaining a license, should become a more in depth, and challenging process to save more lives. Not only do fatality statistics raise awareness to increase the driving age, but also the recklessness and carelessness teens have on the road. Many non-fatal accidents are caused by not paying attention, visual distraction, speeding, failure to recognize hazards and emergency maneuvers (Young novice drivers: careless or clueless? . Due to a combination of these factors, individuals may believe that teens should not be driving at such an early age, because it may make them poor drivers (Is 16 the right age to obtain driver's license? ). Peer pressure among young drivers from fellow passengers may greatly impact driving capability. Being able to take on distractions such as conversations or texting is a skill acquired through multitasking . According to research, multitasking matures deep in the twenties (Is 16 the right age to obtain driver’s license? . Therefore, teens are more subjected to distraction that may occur on the road, which cause many more dangers for those around them. To improve driving conditions among all citizens, mainly teens, Alberta enforced a new distracted driving law. â€Å"Under the new law, drivers will be prohibited from talking, texting or emailing on a hand-held cellphone, using hand-held radio communication devices, using other electronic devices, reading, writing or personal grooming while behind the wheel† (Government of Alberta). Trying to eliminate carelessness and irresponsibility on Alberta roads can be greatly improved through fewer distractions, and a much lesser need to multitask. Besides new laws being placed, government should still consider enforcing an age increase to obtain a driver’s license, to ensure the safety of all. With this in mind, raising the driving age is definitely a step in the right direction, as it can decrease many common broken laws. Not wearing a seatbelt, or careless drunk driving are only a few that are broken every day. Teens may not realize the consequences and costs that every broken law entitles. For simply not wearing a seat belt, a driver can be fined between $200 to $1000, and lose two demerit points; where for a GDL driver only eight are allowed (One person, one seat belt). â€Å"Teens have the lowest rate of seat belt use. According to surveys about 10% of high school students report they do not wear seat belts† (Teen Car Accidents). Novice driver’s immaturity and naiveness not only puts their own lives in danger, but as well as others. While the seat belt law is commonly broken, driving under the influence is more frequent among teenagers. â€Å"60% of all teen deaths in car accidents are alcohol related† (Statistics Teenage Drunk Driving). Much of underage drinking occurs at house parties, hosted by high school students. Feeling confident and in control a teenager might rush into a car, expecting nothing to happen. When in reality the police may stop them, or worse they may land in a fatal crash. â€Å"Social host laws for minors aim to reduce teenage alcohol consumption by imposing liability on adults who host parties† (Angela K. Dills). This is government’s way to prevent adults from supporting underage drinking, which leads to nothing but harm. MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is also an anti-drinking and driving group, whose mission is to stop impaired driving and to support victims of this violent crime (MADD Canada). Albertans are able to see that teens break laws more readily than older, more experienced driver, which is why the driving age should be raised to a more respectable one. Therefore, a consensus should be made among the nation, to raise the driving age to eighteen. Not only will there be a dramatic decrease in accidents, but also a greater care and sense of responsibility on the roads. Lack of speeding and being more considerate about wearing seat belts, may greatly increase the chances of survival while driving. Not only should personal safety precautions be considered, but also the effects of multitasking. As discovered earlier, multitasking is an acquired skill that develops at an older age, which increases a driver’s safety and compatibility on the roads. More careful driving skills tend to be associated with maturity, which is also tends to be associated with safe alcohol use. Teens don’t consider the consequences and make quick, thoughtless decisions that land many other citizens in harmful places or positions. Horror in Frankenstein Essay

There are many forms of tension and horror in this novel. There is a monster, there’s grave robbing, the whole story is against religion and it is warning the reader that trying to play God can only have bad consequences. The novel is controversial in its content and it focuses on people’s prejudice and discrimination together with how people judge others too readily. Another thing that could have been scary for the readers at the time is the idea of electricity bringing life. Since electricity was a reasonably new thing, the concept of this new, weird technology described in the book could have been seen as horrific. Also, the atmosphere was a big part of the horror and tension, pathetic fallacy was used when Dr Frankenstein was creating his monster â€Å"It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out,† It was strange, at the time of the novel being published, for a woman to write a book quite as horrific as Frankenstein. There were many things which could have influenced Mary Shelley in writing a book of this sort, myths, religion, other novels. She could have been influenced by the legends of the poles when creating Robert Walton’s character. She was most likely to have been influenced by scientific research and advances at the time such as discovering electricity. She could have been trying to get people to understand that this type or research and messing around with life and death were wrong. Lastly I think she also had literary influences and I believe that Mary Shelley wanted the novel to be romantic in a way. Mary Shelley creates a lot of tension in the novel, this all starts in letter four from Robert Walton to his sister. She does this very effectively the whole way through the letter, the first line shows this, â€Å"So strange an accident has happened to us that I cannot forbear recording it†¦ † it then takes Walton quite a while to get to the point of explaining the â€Å"accident†, this creates a lot of tension. The whole story about Victor Frankenstein and the events in the letter four are told slowly and gradually adding to the sense of tension, mystery and intrigue for the reader. This effect is carried on throughout the whole novel which is, I think, one of the main reasons for the novel being so well known and enjoyed. There are quite a few causes of tension in letter four, another example is when Walton’s ship was surrounded by ice, which closed it in’ â€Å"scarcely leaving her the sea-room in which she floated. † This creates tension by giving the impression of them being trapped in a dangerous environment. After this, the spotting of the creature creates tension, â€Å"we perceived a low carriage†¦ a being which had the shape of a man, but apparently of gigantic stature, sat in the sledge. † The fact that this is a creature unlike a normal person adds to the tension. Also as the crew and Walton thought that they were alone, being away from civilization, trapped on a boat with a strange creature nearby creates fear as there would be no help at hand if needed. The next thing that created tension was having Dr Frankenstein on board; he was quite a strange person and did not appear normal. When he was found he asked Walton where he was going before he boarded. This, under the circumstances, is a weird question to ask. Walton wrote, â€Å"You may conceive my astonishment on hearing such a question†¦ from a man on the brink of destruction. â€Å"

However Gulliver feels like a freak there, and one day while he was out with the king and queen, an eagle swoops down and carries him off to drop him in the sea. Some sailors then rescue him. But yet again there is a shipwreck, and he finds himself in a world inhabited by Houyhnhnms, a creature that looks like a horse, yet has an amazing intellect. The Houyhnhnms are amazed that Gulliver is intelligent and take him in. Later Gulliver realizes why they are amazed; the only humans in that land are savage and stupid. Swift†s writing style reflects what he thinks of the characters or actions, without telling the reader outright. Influence of Race in 2014 Senator Elections Introduction: Most people who have been disadvantaged because of racial issues are the blacks. For example, in the 18th and 19th century, they were not allowed to vote or engage in any political activity. This is mostly contributed to the perception that the whites had regarding the black people during the slave age. During the period of slavery, black people were viewed as properties, and they did not have any legal and political rights[1]. By 1869, following the end of the civil war, there were numerous debates concerning the rights of slaves, in the American political process[2]. This led to the enactment of the Fifteenth Amendment, which was ratified in 1870. This amendment made it illegal for the state or federal government to prevent anybody from voting or participating in the political process, based on their color, race, or condition of servitude[3]. At the age of five years, John Chun Liu, together with his parents migrated to United States, and they lived in the city of New York. He was enrolled in the public schools governed and managed by the State Government. John Chun Liu attended his primary education at Queens School, and secondary education at Bronx High School[6]. This was in the year 1985. Mr. Liu attended Binghamton University, and he did a course in mathematical physics. He was also a student’s activists, believing in the advancement of students rights. This included the right to getting quality education, and fair fees[7]. This made him rise to the position of the vice president for the school’s student association[8]. Mr. John Chun Liu worked as a manager, for the auditing firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and he was also the President of North Flushing Civic Association[9]. This is before he was elected to the city council of New York. Liu managed to se rve the New York City Council, and he represented district 20. He was elected to the council in the year 2001, to represent the region of Northeast Queens. He was subsequently re-elected, in the elections of 2003, and that of 2005. Between the periods of January 2010, to December 2013, John Chun Liu served as the comptroller of the city of New York. He also unsuccessfully viewed for the position of the mayor of New York, in the elections of 2013[10]. In 2014, Mr. Liu contested for a senatorial position against Tony Avella. Tony Avella was born in the year 1951, and he is currently a Democratic State Senator. He comes from the 11th Senate district of New York. Tony Avella served as a member of the city council of New York, between the periods of 2002, to the periods of 2009. He managed to represents the 19th council district, which served the districts of Whitestone, Floral Park, Douglaston, Little Neck, College Point, etc. At the city council of New York, Avella served at six subcommittees, and this includes committee on building and housing, higher education, veterans, land use, fire and criminal justice, and zoning and franchises. He is an Italian-American, and he is the founder of the Italian-American Caucus. For purposes of contesting for the mayoral elections of 2009, Mr. Avella did not defend his municipal seat in 2009. Methodology: The 2014 New York Senatorial elections in the District II were tightly contested by John Liu and Tony Avella. This election was very tight, and there were a variety of issues that affected the outcome of the elections. It is important to explain that these two people were both democrats, and hence the competition was a primary, in which the Democratic Party was seeking a candidate to sponsor for this senatorial seat. Furthermore, there wasn’t any republican challenger. This means that the bearer of the democratic flag, as the representative of the party, was sure to win the elections. It is based on this fact, that the race was tightly contested between Mr. Liu and Mr. Avella. During the primary campaigns, Mr. Avella leveled a series of accusations against Mr. Liu. Some of these accusations touched on his activities, when he served as the Comptroller of the City of New York[12]. For example, one of the criticisms, leveled against Mr. Liu, was based on the fact that he owed the city of New York, some 500,000 dollars in fines. This is in respect to hanging campaign posters, during the time when he was running for the seat of the New York City Comptroller. These campaign posters were illegally placed. Furthermore, two of the campaign workers of Mr. John Liu were convicted in 2013, for purposes of illegally funneling campaign money, through straw donors. Investigations into the financial activities of Mr. Liu began in August of 2013, when he was accused of illegally raising campaign funds. These investigations were able to find some irregularities on the sources of funding, for Mr. Liu, and this included undisclosed funding, and straw donors. These revelations concerning the fundraising activities of Mr. Liu began in October 2011, when the media began publishing articles, which revealed several inconsistencies, regarding the campaign funds, after interviewing approximately 100 households that were identified as having donated to the campaign funds, for Mr. Liu’s candidacy. Furthermore, 24 irregulariti es were found, and this includes donations from people who claimed that they did not donate. However, their employers claimed that they donated this money on behalf of their employees. Most of the irregularities found in the campaign money donated to Mr. Liu were connected to the business people of Asian origin. On a specific note, the money was connected to the Chinese business personalities. Political scandals are one of the major issues that politicians normally use to discrete the candidacy of their rivals[13]. Mr. Avella was therefore saying that through his collaboration with the Republicans, he was able to improve the educational industry in New York. This is a key factor for the economic growth of the state of New York. This is because the institution would play a role in training medical practitioners, economists, bankers, etc[17]. Through this defense, Tony Avella was justifying his decision to work with the Republicans, despite being aligned to the Democrats. This means that Avella was separating himself from the support of the Queens Democrat, which was crucial for him to gain the nomination of the Democratic Party. Furthermore, Mr. Jo hn Lui was able to gain the support of Joseph Crowley. He was the chairman of the Queens Democratic supporters, who rallied behind him, for purposes of dethroning Mr. Tony Avella[18]. This group comprised of all races that is African Americans, Caucasians, and Asian Americans. However, it is important to explain that Mr. Liu was not motivated by any ideological issue, in campaigning against Mr. Avella. This was the candidate whom he supported during the last senatorial elections of the state of New York. However, his argument was that he was not loyal enough, to the ideals and principles of the Democratic Party. Furthermore, for purposes of winning the elections, there was a need of choosing an experienced and capable politician to contest against Avella in the democratic primaries. Based on this fact, race was not an issue in the choice of Mr. John Liu , by chairman Crowley. Furthermore, Mr. Liu was able to garner the support of the major trade unions in New York City, against Tony Avella. Trade Unions are very powerful political actors, and they play a significant role in ensuring the success or defeat of a candidate[19]. For example, DC 37, the largest Union of Employees in New York was able to endorse the candidacy of John Liu. The major reason for this endorsement was on the belief and attitudes of John Liu, regarding families, and issues that affect the public service employees. The executive director of the Union believed that John Liu was a strong supporter, and a true friend of working families, because he supported policies aimed at making workers to be comfortable. This means that in making their decision, DC 37 was not motivated by race, but by the issues and values that John Liu stood for[20]. He was an active supporter of the rights of workers, and working families, and this is the reason the labor union was able to endorse his candidacy. It is important to understand that DC 37 has huge members, with approximately 121,000 active members, and over 50,000 retirees. This is a huge number of voters that can affect the outcome of an election. Education has its downfalls. Students are only taught what society sees fit to teach them. If a society doesn't want students to learn about a certain period of history, then it is not taught. Education is a tool to succeed in life. The quality of education that a student receives depends upon many issues. One of the biggest differences in education is between public and private schools. In a society that values money, such as ours, the rich are given a better background in education than most people. For the general public, students are taught the same material, and excel at different rates than other students. The people that don't grasp the material usually fall behind and become the working class within our society. Last Thursday, November 29, 2012, this is the day that were waiting for. I was so excited to have our last field trip as a high school. This field trip is very memorable for me because Clare, Alaica, Kim, Ray, and I are first time to be late in our last field trip. We arrive at south supermarket at 5:25am, and almost 5 minutes when the bus left us. There’s no extra bus for the late comers like us. I feel nervous at this time because we don’t know what were going to do. No one knows how to go to our first destination. Ray suggested that it’s better for us to go home and ask help to our parents to bring us to Pasay. Clare, Alaica, and I, didn’t agree to his suggestion, because we know that it will only takes a lot to time before we arrive at our first destination. Alaica decided to ask for help in the guard inside the south supermarket. The guard teach us how to go to MOA in Pasay. We ride at the LRT, from Santolan to Cubao. After that we ask the taxi driver to bring us in Mall of Asia, where Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center are found. We finally reached our first destination. We felt happy because we didn’t expect that we did it. Our friends hug us tight like we’ve never seen for a long years. My heart is jumping because of happiness. We roam around and we saw several stuff that are related to science like, earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics. We also had a short film viewing on how the celestial bodies are being formed. We are all amazed on what we’ve seen. It’s like you were in the outer space when you start to watch that video. We are all entertained and at the same time we are learning. Before we leave this place, our mind are filled with the new knowledge and new experience. Our next destination is in Tzu Chi Foundation in Sta Mesa, Manila, whare you can found a good hearted persons. The people here are working hard not for themselves, but for the people who are disabled. They do it without waiting for any return. When you go inside, you will found their low price shop, where recycled bottles are turned into useful once. All of the items inside are very affordable and useful. The money that are being entered to them, will add to their fund that supports to their charity. Our last destination is in Galilee Mansion Garden Resort in Bulacan. Here, we enjoy our last tour even in the middle of the hottest of the sun.
